100 Verses ~ Week 14

Week 14 Verses:

Isaiah 53: 5-6  "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all."

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend.  What an incredibly appropriate memory verse for the week!

100 Verses ~ Catch Up and Facebook Giveaway

If you've been keeping up with my blog posts, then you know I've been keeping busy with "nesting" projects around the house.  But you may have noticed that a fallen a bit...ahem...behind on my 100 Verses posts.  I do apologize!

Nevertheless, the 100 Bible Verses in 2013 Facebook page is still active with over 400 members.  And I am happy to report that I am still keeping up with my goal of memorizing 2 verses a week!  Actually, those of us at the Facebook page are celebrating 25 verses memorized this week with a fun giveaway!  This giveaway is only happening on the Facebook page, but you are welcome to request to join if you are not already a member to get all of the entry details.  I did want to tell you a little about each awesome company that donated to our giveaway...

Robert J. Morgan

Robert J. Morgan is the author of 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart which is the text that we are basing our 100 Verses in 2013 Challenge on.  From his website:

"Rob Morgan is the pastor of The Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, Tennessee, where he has served for over 31 years. He is a best-selling and Gold-Medallion winning writer with over 25 books in print and over 3.5 million in print circulation."

His other best sellers include Red Sea Rules and Then Sings My Soul.  You'll find devotionals, study guides, children's books and more at his website

Robert J. Morgan has generously donated a signed copy of 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart along with the book's Study Guide for our Facebook giveaway.  I have truly been blessed by this book!  It is not simply a list of bible verses, but a devotional book based on the God-breathed words of Scripture.  Divided in two parts, 100 Bible Verses first is full of inspirational stories and information of the why and how of scripture memorization.  Time and again I was reminded of the importance of consistently writing God's word on the tablet of my heart.  The second part of the book is the bulk of the book.  Each of 100 specifically chosen verses are examined in a one to two page devotional.  Memorizing these verses are enriched by examining them closely through the devotional writing of Robert J. Morgan.

100 Verses ~ Week 7

100 Bible Verses in 2013
This week marks the week that we will be memorizing verses 13 and 14.  As I keep adding more and more verses to my memory, I am increasingly finding it difficult to keep the references straight.  This is always a struggle for me (and I think for many) which is why I shared the tip in Week 1 of reciting the reference at both the beginning and the end of the verse each time you recite it. This will give you double the practice of memorizing the reference.

However, this week I tried a new trick to help aid me in really nailing down these references.  I am finding it helpful so I thought I would share it with you.  I write all of my memory verses on index cards and carry them with me in the car.  I like to have my kids quiz me on car rides.  Generally one of the kids will read the reference to me and I will recite the verse.  But this week I asked my daughter, A10, to read just the first 3 words of the verse.  Then I had to come up with both the reference and recite the entire verse from memory.  This was excellent practice for me!

The verses this week are close to my heart and I am praying that we not only memorize these verses this week, but apply them to our lives.  May your homes and families be richly blessed!

This Week's Verses

Deuteronomy 6:6-7   "These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

100 Verses ~ Week 4

100 Bible Verses in 2013

Can I tell you a secret?

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with dirty diapers, dirty dishes, and dirty kids.  Sometimes I have days when I have to force myself out of bed and then I have to battle my desire to not climb right back in all. day. long.  Sometimes I feel like nothing ever goes my way.

Sometimes in my world of many, many people I feel very alone.

This past week, I was having one of those days.  And in my lonely moment, I cried out to God and this is what I said to Him.

"Oh, Lord.  I know that your word says that you love me, but I'm not feeling very loved right now.  I'm just feeling exhausted and weary. I want Your love to fill my cup to overflowing so that it can spill out on those around me, but how God?  How do I feel your love in the midst of the chaos, and mundane tasks, and disappointments?  And how do I know you love me if I can't feel it?"

And do you know what He did?  He whispered the words of a verse I have been memorizing...

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

Oh yes!  That is exactly what I needed.  I needed the truth of God's word to shine through the darkness of the lies that I was believing.  How could I feel anything but love when I was confronted with this truth...While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Yes, I am loved...I am loved by the One who loves so deeply that his love for me led him to the suffering of the cross.  I am loved by the One who gently reminds me of this truth when I selfishly and ungratefully forget it.

And this is the beauty of scripture memorization.  It allows the opportunity for truth to be spoken to our hearts when we most need it.

This week's verses:

Romans 5:8  "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 10:9   "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

I hope that you are enjoying this journey of memorizing 100 Bible Verses in 2013.  This week marks a full four weeks of scripture memory!  If you are reading about this for the first time and would like to jump in, please feel free!  Click on the 100 Bible Verses tab at the top of my blog for more info.

100 Verses ~ Week 3

Congratulations to everyone who have been working through these memory verses the past two weeks!  God has already been bringing these verses to my mind in my quiet moments...and my chaotic moments (which are far more frequent!)

This week, we are moving on to the The Romans Road.  These verses were among the first verses I memorized many years ago.  Having these scriptures in your memory will be an incredible tool for sharing the gospel at moments notice.  1 Peter 3:15 says "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.  Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."  Knowing the Romans Road verses will help to prepare you to do just that!

This week's verses are:

Romans 3:23  "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Romans 6:23  "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

If you are memorizing from a different translation, feel free to click on links of the verse references to find these scriptures in your preferred bible translation.

Memorization Tool of the Week

When working on a new verse, say it out loud without looking FIVE times in a row.  Here's the kicker, if you mess up...even if it's the fifth time you've said it... you have to start all over.  You want to say it five times correctly in a row. Pin It Now!

100 Verses ~ Week 2

100 Bible Verses in 2013
Wow! What an exciting week it's been at the 100 Verses in 2013 Facebook Group! Over 100 more people have joined in our challenge putting us at over 330 members. The encouragement and ideas from the group have certainly been inspiring! It's not too late join, so feel free to jump in at anytime.

This week's verses are

John 1:14  "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

John 3:16  "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

If you are memorizing from a different translation, feel free to click on links of the verse references to find these scriptures in your preferred bible translation.

Memorization Tip of the Week:  Now, I'm thinking you're going to think I am pretty nerdy for this.  But I've often used the method laid out in the below worksheet to help really cement a verse into my memory.  You really have to think about the verses and say them several times to yourselves to complete this worksheet.

100 Verses ~ Week 1

100 Bible Verses in 2013

The new year is upon us, which means it is finally time to begin our scripture memorization journey!  I am so amazed how God has taken this little idea to start a Facebook group for people who might like to take the challenge of memorizing 100 verses with me and grew it.  Honestly, I expected only about 30 or so people to join our group.  As I am writing this, our group is now over 220 participants!

I am truly excited for each one us as I am reminded of the words of Isaiah 55:11.  " So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."  God is in the business of transforming lives and He uses His Word to accomplish His purpose.  I fully believe that we not only have the opportunity to memorize God's Word this year, but we have the opportunity to be transformed by it!

So, let's get started!

We will begin in the beginning with The Bible's Fantastic Four (2 verses this week, and 2 next week).  Our verses this week are...

Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (NIV)

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (NIV)

If you are memorizing from a different translation, feel free to click on links of the verse references to find these scriptures in your preferred bible translation.

Memorization Tip of the Week:  Each time you say your memory verses out loud while memorizing start and end with the reference.  For example, while reviewing our first verse I will say, "Genesis 1:1.  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1"  The references are usually harder to remember than the verses themselves, so if you review your verses using this method, you will be practicing the references twice as many times as your verse, helping to secure it in your memory! Scripture Memory System Box

You may have noticed that I now have a new tab at the top of my site.  Please check out 100 Bible Verses in 2013 to find out how you can join in the challenge to dig into God's words and "Write them on the tablet of your heart." ~Proverbs 3:3

When I decided to take on this challenge and revamp my scripture memory practice, I was totally inspired by another awesome Scripture Memory System to create a Scripture Memory System Box to organize my verses and help with my daily review.  My box is simplified from the original version a bit, but I'll share it with you along with instructions to set up your own.

You'll need:
An index card  box with tabs (at least 20)
Plenty of index cards (at least 100!!)
A pen - preferable one small enough to fit in the box

So you may want to start by writing down all the verses you already have memorized and or a couple that you want to begin memorizing.  Just write one verse per card.  (Sometimes I memorize a chunk of scripture at a time.  If it is only 2-3 consecutive verses, I will put that all on one card. If it is longer, I will often divide them up over multiple cards but keep them together in a group to review at the same time.)

When you are first learning a verse, write it down on an index card and place it in front of the tabs.  You will review these cards daily.  Keep these verses in this 'daily review spot' until you can easily recall it.
Once you have worked on the verse for a while you will move behind one of the first five tabs.  Label these tabs M, T, W, Th, F for the days of the week.  (I choose to only use M-F, but of course you may want to add Sa and Su tabs as well.)  Now that you know this verse pretty well, you can just review it once a week.  Review the verse weekly for several weeks until you feel confident that you will not be forgetting it.

Finally, you can move it behind one of the next 15 tabs.  Now to be honest, the original creator of this system suggested having 31 tabs at this point and labeling them accordingly, so that your memorized verse would only be reviewed once a month.  But I didn't have 31 tabs...I had 15.  So I decided I would review my memorized verses bi-monthly.  As you can see my tabs are labeled '1, 16', '2, 17', etc.  So, if I put a verse behind the '1, 16' tab then I will review it on the 1st of the month and the 16th of the month.

In the back of the box I keep blank index cards and an ink pen to write new verses.  I have been using this system for about a month and I'm loving it!  I try to spend a few minutes each morning during my quiet time and I often throw my box in my diaper bag to take along with me.  My kids like to quiz me in the car.

I'd love to hear about scripture memory systems and tips that you use!  Let me know in the comments what works for you.
