School Room Art: A Copycat Tutorial

I recently found the above artwork for sale online for about $130.  I really loved the idea for my school room, but had no intentions of paying quite so hefty a fee for school room artwork.  I decided that I would keep my eyes out for wood materials at craft shops and such to recreate it myself.

Alas, I found myself months later still staring at a blank wall in my school room and having not found the perfect wood material.  I had had enough.  I was going to create the art work.  Today.  With whatever I could find in my house.

Here's what I found:
A large piece of white cardboard.  (It was thicker than posterboard but not quite as thick as foam board.)
Acrylic paint.
Paint brushes.
A Pencil.
A level and ruler.
An exacto knife.

I measured and cut nine 10" by 10" squares.

For my first board, I used two colors.  Yellow and grey.
First, I quickly applied the grey brush strokes.
Acrylic paint dries much faster than oil paints, but you will still have some time to apply the yellow paint and blend the colors together until you have the desired effect.  You will want your brush to be slightly wet, but not too wet.  If it is too wet or you apply the paint very thick the cardboard will start to curve.  Don't worry too much about it though.

I like an assembly process, so I then repeated this painting process for the background of each board.  I used the color scheme of the original artwork.
Next use your pencil to write the words.  I think the easiest way to do this is to use your own handwriting for consistency.  But to make sure each board is the same measure out your letters.  For example, on each board I started the first line 2 1/2 inches from the top, but I only wanted my letters to be 2 inches tall.  I placed a ruler at the top and bottom of where I wanted the letters to be and used it as a guide as I was writing the words "teach me".  The words "how to" were also 2 inches tall, but the last word was 4 inches tall.

Once I completed writing the words on each board, I simply went over each word with white paint.  It took a couple coats.
The only thing I actually had to purchase for this project was this Scotch mounting tape.  It cost me about $6 for 2 packages.  Simply peel and stick to the board and then peel and stick to the wall.

You'll definitely want to use your level.  Pre-measure your wall space to decide how far a part you will want to place your boards.  I spaced mine 3 inches apart.

Hope you're inspired!  Be sure to let me know if you complete this project as well!

Tuesday Weigh-In: Doing Hard Things

A year ago the idea of working out was still intimidating.  I wasn't sure what I was capable of doing, but I knew it wasn't much.  I wasn't into sports when I was younger and had truly never pushed my body to the limits of its capability.  Actually, I didn't even think that was a wise thing to do.

Be forewarned, I now totally think we should each be pushing our bodies to the limits of its capability through prayer and on a consistent basis.  As I pray through a workout, through a morning jog, through a half marathon, I have come to realize that God is ever present.  He is my Help.  He is my Strength.  He does not ever leave me.  And because of all this ... I CAN DO HARD THINGS.

I can do hard things.  I know that now because I have done things that I truly thought I wasn't capable of doing.  This has revitalized my walk with the Lord and the calling He has given me.  It is not uncommon for me to have thoughts like the following...

"Remember when I drug myself out of bed at 6:30am and outside to run 4 miles in below freezing temperatures? ... I can get out of bed now and face the children waiting for me to feed, clothe, and teach them."

"Remember when I felt the pain shooting through my calves up to my lower back with every step, but managed to pull out just one more mile? ... I can handle the pain of this hurt, of this ache, that is grieving me today and persevere through it."

"Remember when my arms were shaking like jelly and I thought I was going to fall flat on my face but instead I grit my teeth and held that wall stand for 30 more seconds? ... Well, if I can tackle that then I can tackle the job of teaching this child long division.  Let's just get it done."

There are times when I am running and worshipping and feeling God so fully... feeling as though He is just carrying me through.  But more often, I feel the pain of each step, each breath.  Every movement hurts and I move not to enjoy the journey, but because it brings me closer to the end result.  I know people who love running.  I don't love running.  But I love that I have ran.

And I think God keeps me in that place, because I have so much to learn about staying committed even through trials...about persevering to the end.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." ~Hebrews 12:1

Tuesday Weigh In:  This week my goal is to work out each evening with my hubby.  He is in training for a Tough Mudder event that he is doing in October, but with work and leading us here, he finds it difficult to squeeze in enough gym time.  I know it will be a blessing to him if I am motivated enough to work out with him.

How about you?  What are your goals this week?  How was last week?

Needing a Staycation? Think Field Trip!

The word vacation conjures up memories of rolling waves, hot sand on my feet, and the smell of sunscreen lotion.  As a child, I can remember building sandcastles, boat rides to spot dolphins at sunset, and visiting theme parks.  These were wonderful summer memories and I hope to recreate them all with my own children one day ... just not this summer.

No, this summer the budget is a tad bit tighter.  Even the idea of a 'staycation' sounds a little expensive to me.  After all, where do people usually go on a staycation?  Local amusement parks, water parks, theaters...all super family fun, but still pricey.

So is there an inexpensive alternative that still includes summer family fun and keeps the car mileage low?  I think so!  Instead of thinking like you're planning a vacation, think like you're planning a field trip!

Field trip opportunities are plentiful any where that you live and the best part is that many education centers are free or extremely cheap!  Check out Homeschool Buyers Co-op for field trip ideas in your state.  If you have young ones who aren't yet buying the "Learning is fun" idea (they're totally wrong by the way), just don't call it a "field trip".  They'll have fun and learn without even realizing it.  Just say something like this...

"Today for our staycation, we're going to the planetarium!"

"Today for our family fun day, we're going to the art museum!"

"Today for our awesome summer adventure, we're going to the library!"  ...okay, you might not fool them with that one.

Last Friday, we joined up with two other homeschooling families to enjoy our first field trip of the school year.  We explored the fossil beds at the Falls of the Ohio.

E5 was most excited about the fossils, intensely searching to find each fossil listed on our brochure...

Besides fossils, our girls also found seashells...

And L2 also spotted a very long train crossing the Ohio River.

He watched...

and watched...

and watched...

The day was slightly grey and overcast, which was actually a wonderful relief from the humid weather we have been having.  It was really the perfect day to explore the beds.

Even J1 enjoyed the trip...

As we were planning for our field trip, we also realized that it would be Cow Appreciation Day at Chick Fil A!  That was super awesome because we knew we would need lunch after our trip.  So a little bit of construction paper and quite a few white trash bags later...

Free food for all!  Talk about an inexpensive staycation...the entire day only cost us $2 (parking at the Falls).

Check out other Staycation ideas at the TOS Crew blog.

Weekly Wrap Up - Week 1

Week 1

Wow!  Week 1 of the 2012-13 Integritas Academy School year has been a whirlwind of activity!  If this week is any indication of how the rest of the year is going to be then we are in for one wild ride.

As usual, we have once again started our school year in July because the blazing hot temperatures have run all my little ones indoors. Our early start gives us something to do and will allow for lots of breaks throughout the year when the temperature outside is milder and more pleasant.  As seen above, H6 is working on her Christian Light Publication 2nd grade curriculum.  L4 is excited to have completed the first page of her Alphabet Lap-Note (free from HomeSchoolShare).  And G11 is working on writing paragraphs with our Create Better Writers program that I am reviewing with the TOS Homeschool Crew.
Our most exciting adventure this year is that we have teamed up with two other homeschool families to do school together two days a week.  Our focus on these days is on history and science.  Our kids couldn't be more thrilled to get to visit with their friends so often and we moms are enjoying the combined efforts and accountability in teaching....okay, we like the fellowship too!
My school room finally got a much needed update this week when I worked to add a few colorful touches.  I'll be posting details and instructions for these projects next week!

Our kiddos completed their Summer Reading program from the local public library and were rewarded with these cool baseball hats and tons of free tickets to local events.

Then we finished our week with our first field trip of the school year!  We met our friends at the Falls of the Ohio to explore the awesome fossil beds there.

A field trip isn't complete without lunch...and in this case lunch was free!  Why's that?  Because it just so happened to be Cow Appreciation Day.  To celebrate, we all dressed as cows and received free meals complimentary of Chick-Fil-A!

Tuesday Weigh In - Addicted

Tuesday Weigh In

I have known from a very early age that food had a hold on me.  It wasn't until I became a Christian and began considering weight loss from a Biblical perspective that I realized that truly I was addicted to food.

I think my addiction started as most addictions do.  I had an emptiness that needed to be filled, so I filled it with what was available.

If I was sad and wanted comfort, I turned to food.
If I was lonely and wanted companionship, I turned to food.
If I was stressed and wanted an escape, I turned to food.
If I was happy and wanted to celebrate, I turned to food.

Food is easily accessible and completely acceptable (after all, we must eat to survive).  But the problem is food was designed to fuel our bodies.  It was not designed to be our comforter, companion, or escape.  But if not food, then where should we turn?

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." ~2 Cor. 1: 3-4

"We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ." ~1 John 1:3

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." ~Matthew 11:29

"Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness." ~Psalm 29:2

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." ~Phil. 4:19

It is high time that we realize that God wants us to turn to him for our every need.  If we are turning elsewhere, we are disobeying God.  That is called sin.

Years ago, Chad and I participated in a book study at church based on the book Thin Within.  This is when I first began the realization of how 'out of place' food was in my life.  Thin Within discusses the idea of food addiction and turning to God to help you overcome.  It offers practical advice such as eating only when you are truly hungry and eating only until you are satisfied.

Made to Crave is another book that is currently gaining popularity on this subject.  This is not a "diet" book, but a book about finding your "want to".  The author discusses in depth how we were made to crave...God, not food.

Obviously, realizing that we have a food addiction is just the first step...probably, the easiest step.  The hard part is doing something about it.  Thankfully, the same God who promises to meet our every need also has the power to overcome strongholds.

"The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,  and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor." ~Isaiah 61:1-3

MY WEIGH IN:  In all honesty, I needed the reminder of each of these verses this week.  I am still struggling with putting food in it's proper place.  This week my plan is to count calories again, eating about every 3 hours, and upping my water intake.  I am also working on memorizing some key scriptures to help me in moments of weakness.  I'll also be getting back to my exercise routine after our vacation and general summertime laziness.

Let's keep each other accountable!  Post your Tuesday Weigh In on your blog.  You can offer advice or post frustration or success.  Grab my button from above or on the sidebar and then link up below.  If you don't blog, feel free to leave a comment instead!

Beating the Heat

Last week the temperature was soaring past 100 degrees.  But work still had to be done...
L2 was super excited to help Daddy fix up a family member's car.  Dad fixed the brakes and changed the tire.  Some old paint needed to be scraped off the windows and then we had to tape down the windows and repaint much of the car.

The kids were big helpers all day long.  The big kids helped watch the little ones so I could pitch in and help daddy too.

Not to mention, they were super cute. :o)

...But eventually, we were all rather tired of the heat.

We figured there was really only one to beat the heat...Get out of it!

And since the kids really did deserve a super treat, we decided a family day was in order!

So off to the theater we went!  The kids had all been begging to see the new Disney Pixar's Brave.  We all enjoyed the film...and the a/c!

Later, I took the kids to a local hibachi grill.  Dinner and a show!

J1 was enthralled!

A Walk in the Woods - Guided Hike

On the third day of our anniversary trip, Chad and I scheduled a guided hike with A Walk in the Woods.  We chose a 4 mile trip on a secluded trail.  There was one other couple signed up for a total of five people including the guide.

We were super excited to find out after some conversation that our guide, Charles, was a homeschool graduate (and so was his wife!)  He was a great guide with lots of experience and a thorough knowledge of many plants and wildlife of the Smokies.  He also gave us some history of the land.  I cannot recommend A Walk in the Woods enough if you are ever in the Gatlinburg, TN area.

We started our hike on what was once a "main road" through the Tennessee mountains.

Immediately, we walked into a slew of butterflies feasting on the minerals there.  So pretty to see so many butterflies flying around.

Above, you'll see what is left of a nineteenth century homestead.  The rocky steps lead up to where the house would have stood.

This barn is over 100 years old as is this house...
And see the foundation that has kept this house standing so long...

And here we are trying some edible leaves and twigs found along the trail...

Not exactly yummy, but how could we pass up the opportunity!
