As newlyweds and new Christians many years ago, my husband and I were mentored by a wonderful Christian couple. As well as teach us so much about the bible and marriage, this couple very intentionally instilled in us a desire to memorize scripture. Each week we would memorize new scriptures with them and learned firsthand how "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness." -2 Timothy 3:16
I purchased 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know By Heart by Robert J. Morgan some time ago, but recently just picked it back up again. It's really a great book offering lots of inspiration as well as practical tips on memorizing bible verses and passages. Also included is a list of 100 Bible verses to memorize (along with devotions for each verse).
So I've decided to take up the challenge! I plan to memorize these 100 verses in 2013...just two verses a week. And I'm not the only one. I've also got a Facebook page up and running for anyone who would like to join in and keep each other accountable. Interested in joining? Click over to our Facebook page and request to join.
We'll begin the first week of January!

FAQ's
Do I need the book to join in the challenge?
How many verses will we memorize a week?
There are a total of 100 verses and we will memorize 2 a week for a total of 50 weeks.
Are the verses hard? Will there be any I already know?
The verses we will be memorizing really aren't hard and I think many of them will be familiar to you. The verses include Genesis 1:1, John 1:1, John 3:16, the Romans Road verses and Psalm 23. There are some cases that we will memorize more than one verse in row. (For example, the entire 23rd Psalm.) But we will never memorize more than 2 verses a week. (So that means it will take us 3 weeks to memorize Psalm 23 which is 6 verses long.) While I do think that these are simple and familiar verses, I also agree with the author of the book, that these verses really are verses that everyone should know by heart.
What do I do on the weeks when the assigned memory verses are verses I've already memorized?
You may have some of these verses already committed to memory. If so, you may do one of two things.
1. When we get to a week that includes a verse you already have memorized, consider it an easy week! Keep reviewing your memorized verses.
2. I will be creating an 'Alternate Bible Verse List' for additional verses and posting it to our FB group page. Feel free to choose a verse from that list (or your own) to memorize that week in place of the one you already know.
Do I need to memorize from a certain translation of the Bible?
No. This is your memory work, so use any Bible translation that you like. I will most likely be using NIV when posting, but that does not mean you are required to memorize that translation.
When will the challenge start and end?
This year January 1st falls on a Tuesday, but I would like to post new verses each Monday. So we will start the week of Monday, December 31 - January 6 with our first two verses. We will end the second week of December 2013.
Will there be prizes?
Well, I'm so glad you asked! We will be having a giveaway on the 100 Verses in 2013 Facebook Group page once we've reached 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 verses. If you'd like to donate a prize, feel free to leave a message below with a way to contact you.
How do I join?
You can join in on all the fun at our Facebook group page. You will need to request to join as it is a private group. You can also follow along here on my blog. I will post new verses each Monday starting in January.
The 100 Bible Verses in 2013 Challenge has already started. Can I still join?
Yes, absolutely! It's never too late to start memorizing scripture! Please join in at any time. You may start your scripture memory journey with us on any week. If you would like to attempt to "catch up", links to prior week's verses are posted above and a document listing the entire year of verses is on the Facebook page.

I think you meant 2 Tim. 3:16 :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! ;) Fixed!
DeleteThank you very much for encouraging Scripture memorization!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good idea to take your memory verses with you wherever you go so you can use the natural pause moments of life to practice or review verses. That's where smartphone apps come in very handy, e.g. Remember Me (for Android and iOS)
Hi. Great idea. I have just asked to be as part of your FB group for memorizing scripture for 2013. I have also put a link to the group on my FB page "Coffee With Christians".- God bless Jennyx
ReplyDeleteI am not on Facebook. Can I still participate? Thank you, Angel
ReplyDeleteYes, you can follow along via this blog. I will be posting new verses each Monday. You can subscribe to my blog posts via email if that is helpful to you.
DeleteHi Shanna. I'm Rob Morgan's son-in-law and I manage his website at RobertJMorgan.com -- I'd like to donate some signed copies of 100 verses to your group. If you use the "contact us" form on Rob's website, I'll receive the message. Just tell me where you'd like me to send them -- or you do the giveaway(s) and I'll ship them out for you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great challenge. Please let me know if we can assist you in any way. Rob has seen this group and is tremendously encouraged.
Wow! This is fantastic. Thank you so much Shanna. You are a beautiful vessel in which GOD is filling others through!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting!!! Love to see God's work being done!
ReplyDeleteVery excited to try and keep up with this challenge. It goes along terrifically with my personal goal of getting to know my Bible (and my Abba) more this year! :D Thanks for hosting it!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and I are joining late but we are thrilled to be a part of this group! I pray that we can keep up too. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a wonderful idea. I think I'll have my children and I join you on this journey!
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing that during the Viet Nam War when our servicemembers were prisoners of war that between them they could recite the Bible. I believe that John McCain made the comment during one of his interviews. Thanks for this idea. One of ladies from our church posted that she and her children were doing this for the year. It is be good for all of us. I have an uncle that is 80 and he is memorizing the Bible. He said in all the years of his life he had to memorize things that just didn't matter and he felt that if he could remember all that wasn't he surely could memorize all that really mattered.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea, I think my family is going to join in! Thanks!

I love this book! It has a great preface on the value of memorizing scripture. Many of these verses I memorized during my 13 years of Baptist school. Although I don't use the KJV Bible anymore, that's the version from which I learned them, so that's how I quote them.
